Having initially experienced some of the help and support provided by the Association, I feel that in my own small way I am able to put something back.
John Hayward
My first involvement with the MND Association occurred in the summer of 1995 when my wife was diagnosed as having the disease.
Shortly after this, we had our first contact from the Association and my wife always appreciated the support given to her and myself. Just prior to Maureen's death, on 1 January 1997, we both became active members of a steering group charged with the task of forming what is now the South and East Somerset Branch of the Association.
From the opening of the Branch in January 1997 I have remained involved, firstly as vice chairman and at various times since, as chairman, secretary and publicity officer and am currently combining the roles of secretary and publicity officer.
We are a relatively small Branch but have never had any difficulty in holding on to an enthusiastic and conscientious group of volunteers which has enabled us to enjoy our best ever financial returns over the past year or so.
Now that I am retired I have the time to continue my interest in supporting people with MND, which is now particularly enhanced by the benefits brought to the Branch by my partner Lynda Clark. As our branch contact , Association visitor and newsletter editor, she has been instrumental in helping to raise our profile, within both the voluntary and professional sectors.
