How your money can help

Brian, who has MND, with his wife IreneHere are just a few of the ways your fundraising helps to ensure people with MND are supported and cared for today, and helps to fund research that will change things in the future.
  • Currently 5,000 people in the UK are living with MND. £15 provides an information pack to help a newly diagnosed person learn more about their illness and the support that’s available during a very difficult time.
  • Disease investigation needs hundreds of basic items. A bottle of culture medium costs £12, 100 microscope slides cost £5 and 500 pipettes cost £37 – everyday essentials for a scientist.
  • When MND makes walking difficult or impossible, the stairs at home might just as well be a mountain. £50 covers the monthly rental of a stair lift to help someone with MND.
  • The MND Association DNA Bank and Clinical Database is collecting DNA samples from people with MND. £176 pays for the equipment needed to extract DNA from 50 blood samples – a vital process that allows the DNA to be used for research into the underlying causes of the disease.
  • People with MND can need round-the-clock care. A Professional Night Carer costs £250 – giving the regular family carer a chance to relax for a welcome good night’s sleep once in a while.
  • MND leaves some people unable to speak. A special keyboard-generated voice machine called a ‘Lightwriter’ costs around £2,200 but it’s a small price to pay to give someone back their power of speech and communication.
