Despite the fact that Britain is a nation of tea drinkers, soup and bread (22%) just beats tea and biscuits (21%) as our favourite food to dunk. However, for 18 – 24 year olds (22%) dunking naan bread in curry is the top dunking combination. Curry sauce is very popular in Scotland (20%) where it is voted top dunking condiment compared to the UK as a whole (19%) who prefers to dunk in ketchup.
National findings from the survey
Nearly half (48%) the population dunks on a weekly, or more regular basis.
Younger people especially seem to like to dunk, with 33% of 18 -24 year olds dunking at least two to three times a week.
Soup and bread (22%) just beats tea and biscuits (21%) as the nation’s favourite dunk.

Strawberries in chocolate sauce is the least favourite food to dunk with just 3% calling it their favourite.
The gastro-pub favourite of bread with dipping oil and vinegar illustrates a real North/South divide with nearly three times more people in London and the South choosing this as their favourite (8%), when compared to the North (3%).
Regional variations
LONDON
Dunking pitta bread in houmous is more popular in London than anywhere else in the UK (12%).
Londoners also picked out houmous (19%) as their favourite dunking condiment, jointly with ketchup (19%).
Over half (51%) of people in London dunk weekly or more, with 10% dunking on a daily basis.
THE SOUTH
Nearly half (47%) of people in the South say they dunk weekly, or more often.
They are traditional in their dunking habits with biscuits and tea (23%) beating soup and bread (21%).
NORTHERN IRELAND
Dunking is massively popular in NI with 63% dunking weekly or more often.
Soup and bread is the favourite dunking meal in NI with 21%, followed closely by chips and ketchup (19%).
Dunking bread with olive oil/balsamic vinegar is nearly as popular (15%) as the classic tea and biscuits (16%).
Salsa (16%) proves rather popular in NI as their second favourite dunking condiment after ketchup (25%).
MIDLANDS/WALES
43% dunk weekly or more, the lowest score out of all the regions.
The midlands and Wales are more likely to select curry and naan bread as their favourite than any other region (apart from Scotland).
THE NORTH
48% of northerners say they dunk weekly or more.
Bread in soup (25%) is their favourite followed by tea and biscuits (20%).
People in the North were less likely to be caught dunking bread in olive oil (3%) than anywhere else.
YouGov Survey
The survey was carried out by YouGov plc. Total sample size was 2,218 UK adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 6th and 7th May 2008. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all UK adults (aged 18+).
