Breathing Space Kit

A key part of the Breathing Space programme is the Breathing Space Kit artworkBreathing Space Kit (BSK). It has been introduced after working closely with GPs community nurses, palliative care specialists and other professionals. The use of the kit is regularly monitored and evaluated so that recommeded improvements in management can be made to the benefit of people living with MND.
I would just like to express my appreciation of the MND Association's Breathing Space Kit and say how beneficial it was to both family and nurses involved..... When I received a frantic 'phone call from the family I was able to administer the medication without delay, and the patient was able to settle immediately.

District Nurse
The kit and accompanying leaflets are provided to a GP free of charge on request. We suggest a range of medications to be kept in the box to alleviate symptoms such as breathlessness, choking or related panic which may occur during the course of the illness.

Although most people will never need to use a BSK its presence in the house will bring confidence and reassurance to all.

The BSK should be seen as part of a framework of holisitic care for the person with MND and while appropriate for emergency use further thought and discussion may be required in providing medication on a more continuous basis ie through a syringe driver.

We would also recommend referal to local specialist palliative care services.

Programme leaflets

At the time of providing a BSK you may also find that people want to talk more openly about dying. Two leaflets have been produced to help with these discussions. Death and dying (88 kb) [pdf] aimed at professionals and How will I die? (178 kb) [pdf] aimed at people affected by MND.
