All-Party Parliamentary Group on MND
The All-Party Parliamentary Group on MND was established in January 2002. The purpose of the Group is to increase the understanding of MND among Parliamentarians and to provide a political forum for discussions and debate of the issues facing people affected by MND.
The Chairman is Mark Todd MP (South Derbyshire), the Joint Vice-Chairmen are Dr Vincent Cable MP (Twickenham) and Nick Gibb MP (Bognor Regis and Littlehampton) and the Treasurer is Baroness Noakes DBE.
The Group meets quarterly and at each meeting a different issue is discussed.
In November 2003 the Group welcomed its first Ministerial speaker when Health Minister Dr Stephen Ladyman MP talked about the National Service Framework for Long-term Conditions and how it will specifically address the needs of people with rapidly progressing conditions such as MND. In 2004, Dr David Oliver talked about palliative care for people with MND and Ian Salt spoke about equipment provision. In 2005 the Group has so far welcomed Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss who talked about euthanasia and Professor Nigel Leigh who spoke about non-invasive ventilation. Ron Setford, who has MND, joined Prof Leigh and recounted his personal experiences of using non-invasive ventilation and how it had changed his life.
