Visitor Training Programme

The aim of the Association visitors training is to ensure all visitors have the necessary skills to carry out the role effectively.

The training programme

MND Association Visitors attend a training course

Our four-day training course, which won a national training award in 2004, calls for a huge commitment to complete the full programme.  The format is as follows:

  • an introductory day
  • a two-day residential
  • a follow up day

Topics covered include:

  • what is MND?
  • the MND Association
  • listening skills
  • loss and bereavement
  • dealing with difficult questions
  • confidentiality
  • equal opportunities
  • equipment and communication aids
  • health and social care professionals

During your training there is a six to eight week period where you will usually have the opportunity to do some of the following:

  • spend time with an experienced Visitor
  • attend a local branch/group meeting
  • build your knowledge of the Association's information resources
  • attend a regional meeting or conference

Ongoing training and support

The Association is committed to ensuring that all visitors have access to regular support and supervision.  On a day-to-day basis support can be accessed through other visitors, staff and MND Connect.  Ongoing development is provided through participation in local support meetings and annual participation at visitor development days.
