MND Connect

MND Connect logo MND Connect is part of the Association's Care Information Service and is open to anyone who wants information about MND including people with MND, family members, health and care staff, students and members of the public.
"I work part time as a GPs receptionist so I am used to speaking to people who are upset or worried. I volunteer one evening each week on MND Connect using a phone at my own house. It is very rewarding and easy to fit around my work and family life."

MND Connect Volunteer
Volunteers come from many walks of life and need not have met someone with MND to be able to help. The important thing is that you are able to communicate well and respond sensitively to the practical and emotional content of the calls.

An initial interview allows us to find out about you and gives you the opportunity to discuss MND Connect work.

Volunteers either work in National Office during normal office hours (for half a day) or at home weekday evenings (one session per fortnight).

What training will I get?

The Care Information Service ensures all MND Connect volunteers have a certain level of training and support before they take calls on their own.
The course covers:

  • Understanding Motor Neurone Disease
  • Services of the MND Association
  • Listening skills
  • Care Information Service
  • Equipment loan
  • Loss and bereavement
  • Carer’s perspective

After a final interview, volunteers shadow an experienced member of the team and start working independently as soon as they feel able.
