On the day of my wife’s diagnosis as having MND, 19 March 1992, the consultant, Dr Walls at Newcastle General Hospital, was extremely helpful.
He broke the news in a very considerate manner, and proceeded with the progression that he expected. He also mentioned the MND Association and asked if we wished to be involved, to which we readily agreed.
Introduction to the Branch
Within a few days, at our local shops, the chairman of the Newcastle Branch, Jane Evans, introduced herself, (she lives nearby) and invited me to attend a meeting. There, the Treasurer, Joyce Thompson, presented draft accounts and asked me to be relieved of the post which was not surprising as she was doing a full time job of work and had a young family requiring her attention.
Getting involved
Under the circumstances I became Treasurer for six years, followed by five years as Chairman, then a period to date as a 'roving ambassador' which involves speaking to various groups (adults to school children) and collecting cheques when generous groups offer. Incidentally, each of my jumpers and jackets displays the Thumbs Up badge which frequently invites the question “what is that for?” (Invaluable publicity).
Finally, the Branch Committee and National Office paid me the honour of appointment as President of the Branch in 2005.
