Land's End to John O'Groats

Please can we introduce you to Nathan and Darren. They are cycling the 1083 miles from Land's End to John O'Groats in aid of MND.

The charity is close to Nathan's heart as Nathan's mum Mandy battled with MND for the best part of 5 years before unfortunately passing away from this incurable disease at the start of 2000. Nathan says that MND Jersey was a massive help to the whole family, providing support and much need equipment to assist with making Mandy's life that little bit easier.

"In addition to medical equipment MND Jersey even organised and financed a holiday to Disneyworld in Florida to help Mum achieve one of her lifelong dreams of taking her children to this amazing place".

"After realising the importance of having a group like MND Jersey by your side during these difficult times, we would like to raise as much money as possible to help MND Jersey continue their amazing efforts in supporting families to fight against this devastating disease".

If you would like to support Nathan, Darren and MND Association Jersey, we would would be most grateful to you.

Motor Neurone Disease Association (Jersey) Holiday Bursaries

A message from MND Association Jersey.

As the result of the exceptional fund raising efforts of a local family, Motor Neurone Disease Association (Jersey) has been able to establish a bursary fund which, with the agreement of the family will be used to facilitate and assist financially where possible, a holiday in Jersey for persons living with MND, their carers or companions and provide respite for families.

Our funds are limited but subject to the number and nature of requests received, financial assistance may be given in part or in whole towards the transportation cost of sea ferries, air fares or accommodation. The offer will remain open so long as funds remain available or our ability to top them up over time.

The Association has been in discussion with the Maison des Landes Hotel which is run by a Charitable Trust set up by the Lions Club of Jersey. The hotel has been catering for guests in all age groups and with all manner of disabilities including MND since the mid 1960's. The trustees are anxious to offer their facilities people affected by MND in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The extent of the facilities and services offered at the hotel including a hydrotherapy pool is described more fully on the hotel's website www.maisondeslandes.co.uk

There is general advice given on the website on nursing support in Jersey or guidance can be obtained directly from the hotel on other medical support or services where these may be required. Readers of Thumb Print  (Summer 2018) will already be familiar with the experiences of a lady who stayed at Maison des Landes during a holiday in Jersey.

Availability of accommodation?

The Jersey Association's offer of assistance is not restricted to those using solely Maison des Landes, but anyone considering alternative accommodation would need to make appropriate enquiries with regard to accessibility and specific facilities such as wet rooms electric beds, hoists etc.

For those who may consider Maison des Landes Hotel we have been advised that there is consistently, a number of repeat bookings from year-to-year. The hotel can offer single, twin, or triple bedded rooms and a self-catering facility. An early enquiry of the availability of accommodation direct to the hotel is recommended.

How to apply for assistance?

The decision as to the extent to which we are able to support requests for financial assistance will be made by the MND Association of Jersey after recommendation by the Regional Care Development Adviser or the family's Association Visitor or the MND Association’s Support Services Team, through whom initial contact with the Jersey Association should be made.
