Symptom control

Although MND is progressive and cannot be cured, there is support available to manage the disease and help control the symptoms.

This can range from symptom medication and therapies, through to clinical equipment. The support provided will depend on your individual needs and preferences.

Everyone experiences a unique journey with MND, so your relationship with your health team is very important. The quicker you link into available services following diagnosis, the better you can be supported.

Many health and social care professionals are involved in the care of a person with MND. This group is often referred to as a multi-disciplinary team. You will meet them through referral from your GP, or at an MND Care Centre, or at a neurological clinic.

You may also be referred to a hospice for palliative care, to help you maintain the best possible quality of life during the course of the disease. You can approach your local hospice as an individual if you have not been referred. The services available may vary at different hospices, but usually include symptom control, with a variety of additional support. A good relationship with your local hospice enables the resident health professionals to build a clear picture of all your needs. Should you need to spend any time in hospital, the hospice will then have a detailed understanding of your case, which may help to reduce the length of your stay.
