Benefits and Finance

It is fair to say that most of us will experience financial problems at some stage in our lives. If you are living with MND and experiencing financial problems we appreciate how extra difficult this must be for you and your family.

In this section we introduce you to a range of welfare benefits provided by the department for work and pensions. We also let you know about other financial support that may be available to you.

Hospital Travel Costs Scheme - changes

The scheme exists to ensure individuals are not denied access to healthcare because they can’t afford the travel costs to attend appointments.


Direct Payments for Carers

Direct payments can be made to carers who have been assessed as needing help from social services.


The Social Fund

The Social Fund provides lump sum payments, grants and loans for important costs. Loans and Community Care Grants from the Social Fund are discretionary and are administered by Jobcentre Plus.


NHS Prescriptions

The NHS offers free prescriptions to people over the age of 60, those  living with certain medical conditions and/or in receipt of certain social security benefits.


Carers' Allowance

Carers Allowance is the main benefit paid to carers.


Carers' Premium/Addition

The carer premium and addition are extra amounts used in the calculation of some means tested benefits.

Carers Credit
