Riluzole – how it works
Riluzole helps to inhibit the amount of glutamate (a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system) released in nerve impulse transmissions.
Glutamate in excess has been shown to cause brain and spinal cord nerve damage.
Trial results indicated that survival rates were boosted for those taking riluzole compared to a placebo.
Riluzole is taken in tablet form twice a day.

Complementary therapies can help to make day-to-day living more comfortable for people with MND by helping to control symptoms. It is generally thought that relaxation can help to reduce anxiety and stress. Massage, aromatherapy and reflexology offer effective means of muscle relaxation, improve blood and lymphatic circulation and help to relieve pain by encouraging the production of endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers. It is essential you seek the services of a qualified practioner before undertaking any treatment.
