David

David StokesMy name is David. I am 63 years young, married (41 years) with two children and three grandchildren and live in Gloucestershire.

I was diagnosed with MND in 1987 and recently told it is PLS.

My wife and I continue to travel and have recently returned from seven weeks touring New Zealand.

David, who has PLS

My interests were, and still are, mountaineering, rock climbing, squash, tennis and swimming. Swimming is the only active exercise I do now, swimming one mile each week (backstroke).

Prior to my retirement in 1991 I was formally a Managing Director of the Xerox Corporation and continued as a Non Ex Board Director until 2002.

Over the period 1984-2003 I was Chairman of our local Parish Council and at various times also Chaired the Governors of our local primary school and the Village Hall Management Committee. I was involved with the construction of a new Recreation Area comprising a pavilion, tennis courts, children’s play/activity area etc; which opened in 2003 bearing my name.

During the early stages of my illness, I was involved with Peter Cardy (Director) and Lady MacNeil (first Honorary President) of the MND Association but sadly had to withdraw due to business commitments. In recent years I’ve worked with the Gloucestershire Branch as their Publicity Officer.

In September 1984, I became aware of ‘catching’ my left foot when walking, but it was not until 1986 that I saw a neurologist and MND was finally confirmed in 1987.

Since diagnosis, symptoms have progressed, albeit relatively slowly. Muscle atrophy, cramps and leg discomfort occurs, whilst speech, mobility, swallowing and writing have become difficult. However, I still can walk a short distance and am able to drive. I remain positive and philosophical about my situation. My wife and I continue to travel and have recently returned from seven weeks touring New Zealand.

My wife, children and grandchildren are a continuing source of strength and don’t allow me to dwell on my situation!
