Celebrating support for research funding campaign
07 March 2007
More than 1,300 letters and emails from supporters young and old have been sent to the Prime Minister, calling for greater research into Motor Neurone Disease. The letters and emails have been sent since the New Year and more are still arriving at Downing Street every week. They form part of the MND Association’s campaign to raise £15 million to drive research forward towards a world free of MND.
Kirstine Knox, Chief Executive of the MND Association, said: “I have been overwhelmed and moved by the number of letters and emails that have been sent in support of our campaign. I would like to offer my sincere thanks to everyone who has taken the time to write.
“The writers include the sons, wives, sisters, friends and parents of those who have died from this devastating disease, as well as people who are living with MND now. Their stories of how MND has affected their lives are incredibly moving, and convey powerfully the need for more research into the disease.”
The MND Association recently entered talks with the Medical Research Council, the independent body that decides how Government funding for research should be spent. The discussions concern whether there is a way to make more opportunities available for funding high quality research, and how we can work together to raise the status of MND research to make it more attractive to scientists.
Dr Knox said that these talks were positive, but still at an early stage. She added: “Once we know what the outcome will be, I look forward to sharing the results with everyone who has supported our campaign.”
