Disappointing results of minocycline clinical trial announced
04 May 2007
Disappointing results of a US clinical trial of the drug minocycline for people with MND were announced earlier in the week at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting in Boston.
Minocycline demonstrated no beneficial effect, and for some patients, worsened measurable outcomes. A previous trial indicated that minocycline was safe and well tolerated.
A European clinical trial has been planned for a number of years, and it has been carefully designed to complement the US trial mentioned above. We do not yet know what impact the disappointing news from the US will have on the European trial.
“We are in regular contact with the neurologists organising this European trial and as soon as we have anything definite to tell people with MND we will” explained Dr Brian Dickie, Director of Research Development at the MND Association. “If you have any queries in the meantime regarding this trial, please contact the MND Connect team on 08457 62 62 62 or by email at mndconnect@mndassociation.org”.
