FREEMASONS HELP FUND MND RESEARCH
08 February 2006
The money will help finance a PhD student who is working on an MND Association-funded research project.
The three-year project entitled ‘Cdk5 signalling and disruption to the Golgi apparatus in Motor Neurone Disease’ will investigate whether or not a chemical imbalance in a complex piece of cellular machinery called the Golgi apparatus causes motor neurones to degenerate. Disruption of the Golgi apparatus is one of the earliest signs that motor neurones are malfunctioning.
Laura Chapman, Chief Executive of the Freemasons’ Grand Charity, said: “Learning more about causes, treatments and a cure for Motor Neurone Disease is vital. We appreciate the importance of the work of the MND Association and are proud to support research into this devastating illness.”
The Freemasons’ Grand Charity is the central grant-making charity of all Freemasons in England and Wales. The organisation was established primarily to make donations to charities that support vulnerable people, hospices, medical research, youth opportunities, hospices and emergency relief work.
Sue Thorn, Head of Trusts and Major Donors, said: “We are delighted that the Grand Charity of Freemasons has chosen to donate so generously to us. Their support will enable us to further our understanding of MND.”
