Lembit Opik and the Cheeky Girls experience the joys of dunking
27 June 2008
It’s official – the dunk-it campaign has been launched! The MND Association has gone on record and asked the nation to turn their dunking habit into a fundraiser to raise vital funds. The national launch took place at the world-famous Tea Cosy in Brighton. The Tea Cosy was chosen as the perfect launch venue because of its reputation as being the one place in the UK where dunking is completely forbidden.
The very strict owner and etiquette expert David Daly, who has based his menu on high tea at the Ritz, has a horror of dunking biscuits – along with people using mobile phones, talking too loudly or putting their little finger in the air! He gives customers a book of rules with their menu and has even been known to throw people out for breaking them. However David agreed to hold a one day dunking amnesty to help raise awareness of the dunk-it campaign during MND awareness week.
President Lembit Opik and the Cheeky Girls travelled down to Brighton for the launch and to show their support. The Cheeky Girls had an unexpected welcome when Lembit and David dunked them into some cold tea. However with fantastic humour the girls took it in their stride and still managed to look incredibly glamorous!
Dunking fever managed to touch everyone at the event. Even anti-dunking David was persuaded to dunk a custard cream in his tea for the first time ever. Meanwhile the Mayor of Brighton shared with the crowd his love of dunking. He found it hard to believe that anyone could be against dunking, and was very surprised that David would waste his only dunk on a custard cream when there was far better dunking biscuits around!
