01 December 2007
Toronto’s Deputy Mayor, Joe Pantalone opens the 18th International Symposium Following introductory comments from Sheffield-based Professor Pam Shaw; Deputy Mayor of Toronto, Mr Joe Pantalone welcomed the delegates to the city and to the 18th International Symposium on ALS/MND. In his speech he thanked the delegates for all their hard work and dedication in researching treatments for ALS/MND.

This year more than 800 delegates are attending the three-day symposium and over 400 abstracts were submitted for presentation from scientists – testimony to the growing popularity of this event.

Speaking to the international audience, Pantalone explained what an international city Toronto is with over 100 spoken and 50 per cent of the population born outside of the city. The audience listening to his opening presentation was equally diverse. Delegates at the International Symposium on ALS/MND represented over 30 different nationalities gathering to hear the latest research into understanding and managing this devastating condition.
