Kevin Talbot

Dr Kevin Talbot is Senior Clinical Lecturer in Neurology at the University of Oxford and Consultant Neurologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. He is Director of the Oxford MND Care and Research Centre in which patients are cared for by a multidisciplinary team.

What has been the highlight of your day?

Delegate reporter Kevin Talbot The opening lecture by Professor Mike Strong was a really great summary of some of the complex issues about whether MND is 'one disease or many'.

What message would you give to someone with MND about what you have learnt so far?

By studying the disease at the pathological level, i.e. looking directly at the brains and spinal cord of MND sufferers, we are learning new things that bring us closer to understanding the true nature of the disease.

Which presentation did you find most interesting?

In addition to the above mentioned, there was a great presentation by
John Ravits. He is one of a number of scientists studying the protein
changes in MND - 'what goes up and what goes down' - he
showed us that understanding this data by looking at biologically
meaningful pathways is the real way to make sense of a complicated
field.

Who has made the biggest impression on you?

The fact that the MND/ALS research community is realising that this is
a complicated disease with no simple answers and we are going to need
complex solutions.

How will what you have learnt at the symposium influence your future work?

Simply by inspiring me to go back to the lab and back to the clinic and
working harder to make my contribution to beating this disease.
