More information

More information on the grant application process is available from Marion Reichle or Natasha Rowe. An explanation of the decision making process is given in our Research Governance Overview (209 kb) [pdf] and Research Information sheet  G - The Research Advisory Panel (85kb).

A text version of the grant application process flow chart is available.

Note 1: Summary application details posted

The dates for Biomedical Research Project GrantsPhD Studentships and Healthcare awards are available on this website. If you need dates further ahead please contact Marion Reichle for Biomedical awards or Sarwat Aslam for Healthcare awards at the MND Association for more information.

Note 2: Application information sent on request

Please contact Marion Reichle or Natasha Rowe for both project and PhD types of award or Sarwat Aslam for Healthcare awards. Summary applications are requested in the first instance. Application forms, guidelines and grant conditions are not available online. (This helps monitor which applications can be expected for each panel meeting and avoids superfluous administration for all concerned).

Note 3: Initial peer review

The Association has a Biomedical Research Advisory Panel (BRAP) and Healthcare Research Advisory Panel (HRAP)  whose roles are to advise the Board of Trustees and the Director of Research Development on all matters relating to biomedical and clinical research. Summaries are reviewed by at least three members of the BRAP and HRAP respectively, according to the criteria for Association funding. Research Information Sheet G - The Research Advisory Panel (75 kb) provides an explanation on the role of BRAP and HRAP in the research funding process. The Association is a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) and has been awarded a Certificate of Best Practice  in peer review by the AMRC.

Note 4: Final decision on applications

All applicants will be notified in writing on the outcome of their application. This will include copies of the referees reports and comments from the RAP where appropriate. A grant will not commence until a grant acceptance form, with implicit agreement to comply with the grant terms and conditions, signed by the grantee and the respective finance department has been returned to the MND Association.

In particular, projects should not start and grants will not be activiated until copies of home office or ethics committee approval or licence have been received by the Association.
