Branch and Groups – 40th anniversary events
In our 40th anniversary year a number of our branches and groups are holding a series of events across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
We’ve grouped these by the different event types, and if you’d like to get involved, you can find out more by clicking on the '+' symbol to display more details.

The Oxfordshire branch was one of the earliest formed groups having started 32 years ago in 1987.
To celebrate the Association's 40th anniversary, the branch will be holding their 9th annual branch walk in Blenheim Park on Saturday 5 October the day before the Association's formation.

The East Kent Group will be hosting a 'Ruby Walk to d'feet' on Sunday 6 October. The walk will last for 40 minutes and supporters are being asked to try and raise £40 sponsorship.

The branch will be holding a Walk to d'feet and Blackpool Tower light up on Sunday 6 October.
The group will be holding a Walk to d'feet MND on Sunday 6 October between 10am and 2pm at Coate Water Country Park in Swindon.
About 20 volunteers will complete a total of 40 laps if the park which is 1.75 miles per lap. The group will be raising awareness and collecting funds to support local people with MND.
These 3 groups are inviting supporters and members past and present to mark the 40th anniversary of the Association at a joint afternoon tea event on Sunday 6 October.
The branch are holding a thank you lunch for supporters and people affected by MND locally on Sunday 6 October.
The branch are hosting a social lunch in recognition of the 40th anniversary on Tuesday 8 October.
Central and East Lancs Group
Held a lunch to mark the occasion, volunteers received long service awards ranging from 5 – 20 years. Len Johnrose (patron for the Group) also attended.
Hosted a summer BBQ with a 40th anniversary cake.
East Surrey Branch
Hosted an indoor street party to commemorate the 40th anniversary. Four volunteers received long service awards (covering 80 years between them).
The branch are hosting ‘A night at the Oscars’ on Saturday 5 October.
The group will also be hosting a 40th Anniversary Party at the Lords Hill Academy on Tuesday 8 October (where the committee meets) at 7pm with Rosie Harris (RDM) giving a speech about the Association.
Building light ups
The branch will be lighting up the Blackpool Tower on Sunday 6 October.
St George’s Hall and Liverpool Town Hall will both be lit up in MND colours to raise awareness on Sunday 6 October. They are inviting people to join them at St George’s Hall at 7pm followed by a walk to the Town Hall.
Southampton and Winchester Group are doing a 'Super Selfie Light Up' photo in front of the Guildhall in Southampton on Sunday 6 October at 7pm; the Guildhall will be lit up in blue and orange for 24 hours to raise awareness of the Association and our 40th Anniversary.
The branch will be lighting up The Keep, Dorchester in Association colours on Sunday 6 October.
The branch will be lighting up Beverly Minster in Association colours on Friday 11 October.
Greenbridge roundabout in Swindon is being lit in the MND blue and orange every evening from 1-13 October.

South London Branch
The branch asked 40 people to raise £40. Events included bake-sales, school mufti days, raffles, wing-walks, quiz nights and more.
South East Wales Branch
The branch asked supporters to get involved and do something with the number 40 to mark the occasion. One member of the branch made 40 keyrings to sell.
West Yorkshire Branch
The branch asked supporters to share 40 photos of their loved ones.
The branch is hosting a multi-faith ceremony on Saturday 5 October. A service has been arranged by the MND Association Cambridge Branch. To be held at 4.00pm at Peterborough Cathedral to celebrate 40 years of the MND Association.

Lesley Ogden: Memories of the beginning (read on page 7)
Kevin O’Neill has arranged for a quarter peal to be rung on the weekend of the Association’s 40th anniversary at his local church in Hook Norton. The idea has spread to getting other Oxfordshire churches involved, even nationwide, backed up by an article in Bell Ringers World by Russ Spivey. The idea is that on or around Saturday 5 October at 7pm we ring as many bells as we can throughout the UK, and link our performances to “Sight and Sound – It’s all I have left” on BellBoard the national bell ringers database.
Following the Group's anniversary events, the MND Society at Southampton University’s MedSoc has secured a prime spot at Southampton General Hospital on Friday 11 October to create awareness of the disease.
To round off the 40th events, Winchester Cathedral offered their support at the regular Sunday Choral Evensong held at 3:30pm on Sunday 20 October. The special service is open to everyone and will start with a unique speech and prayers for fight against MND before Winchester Cathedral’s choristers and lay clerks begin. The Dean welcomes MND T-shirts at the service to create more awareness and will join the group for photographs outside the Cathedral after.
East Dorset & New Forest Branch
The branch hosted at 40th anniversary tombola.
They also created a brochure of their 40 events fundraising & awareness events throughout the year.
East Surrey Branch
The East Surrey Branch hosted a fabulous 40th Anniversary concert with the London Welsh Male Voice Choir on Saturday 23 March at St Mary’s Church, Horsham with over 500 people in attendance. Bob Mountney, a member for 40 years, and living with MND, was delighted to be part of this amazing evening. The retiring collection was just over £2,300.

“It was a fabulous evening and all funds raised will be in support of people living with MND and their families in the East Surrey Area. A special mention too for the volunteers from West Sussex North branch who made up much of the team who helped us put on this event.”
The Montgomeryshire Branch raised £251 at their 40th Anniversary collection at the Newtown Tesco on Sunday 23 June.
North & West Cumbria Group
Members and supporters of the group enjoyed an Ullswater cruise. A great opportunity for people affected by MND and volunteers to get together.
South Yorkshire Branch
The branch had their summer open meeting at the Botanical Gardens, Sheffield.
