Take a look at what our brilliant fundraisers did last year
Becky Godfrey walked 100km in silence for 26 hours. She wants to walk 100km every year for the rest of her life in honour of her dad.
Chrissy Le Roux stayed silent for 24 hours at a family party, updating Facebook and filming her day to support her dad who was struggling with his speech.
Marie Holmes from Northern Ireland stayed silent for an hour a day for the whole of June. Marie was inspired by her husband, George, who had MND.
Ideas and Inspiration
Your silent kit
If you’re staying silent for any length of time you’re going to need to get prepared. Perhaps carry a note book and pen around with you, have some basic phrases on signs or written down. A whiteboard might be the very thing - why not put your Silence Speaks sticker on it. You could use the ‘speak’ option on your smartphone or tablet or download some communication apps which allow you to type then speak - you can even choose an accent.
Dress to impress
Wear the sticker in your pack so others know you’re unable to speak and what you’re doing to make a difference for people affected by motor neurone disease. Don’t forget you can also order a Silence Speaks t-shirt and really make an impact.
Silence is golden
We know there will be times when mime, text and post-its just don’t cut it! If you need to break your silence, panic not. Simply donate an amount for a golden ticket and you can take time out and say what you need to say! We have sheets of golden tickets to download on our website, to help you raise even more money to support people affected by MND.
Share videos and photos of your silence on social media using #silencespeaks and the selfie card in your fundraising pack. Why not write a blog and share your experiences of losing your voice. Don’t forget you can raise extra cash too by including details of how to donate. Make it easy for family and friends to donate by setting up a text code along with your Just Giving online donation page. Share the code and the number on social media and watch the pounds add up!
Feeling happy because you’re raising money for a good cause 🙂 Feeling frustrated because you want to talk 🙁 Use emoticons to communicate throughout your silence! Either keep your phone handy or print off the downloadable emoticon sheet
A TV challenge
Boost your sponsorship by toughening your challenge. Can you watch your favourite TV shows in silence? No cheering in football matches, no shouting out the answers during quiz shows, no screaming at reality TV stars. Keeping your opinions to yourself might be more difficult than you think.
Spread the silence
When you've finished your challenge spread the message by nominating others to keep it zipped. This is a great way of helping raise even more money for people affected by MND.
