Highly commended award for contribution to the NHS

The ‘MND First Contact Group’, a partnership between the Cleveland Branch, Middlesbrough MND Care Centre and Butterwick Hospice (Stockton), recently received a ‘Highly Commended’ award at the 2016 Bright Ideas in Health Awards. This event was organised by NHS Innovations North, to celebrate the very best innovations developed by healthcare staff in the North East and North Cumbria. The awards ceremony was held on 30 June at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead.

Their award was in respect to the effective collaboration and co-operation between the branch and hospice, whereby the money raised by the branch helps to fund alternative therapies for people living with MND and their carers.

The ‘Butterwick First Contact Group’ Project has used the branch funded therapy sessions to encourage earlier interaction and support from local hospice services; increase the monitoring of symptoms through collaboration between the Hospice Nurse and Care Centre Specialist Nurse; as well as encouraging peer support within a non-threatening and supportive environment.

Luke Rutter, Branch Treasurer, said: “We are in the third year of this branch funded initiative. It has proved a great success and is economically viable as we AVs also attend and socialise with multiple plwMND and their carers. Whilst initially intended as beneficial therapies, the sessions have become a weekly social event, looked forward to by all who attend.”
