Making a splash for London City Swim

London City Swim 2017 Group

On Friday (22 Sept), the inaugural London City Swim, sponsored by Intertrust, took place with over 320 swimmers doing their bit to #swimforMND.  What a fantastic day it was! The sun shone brightly, the atmosphere was absolutely buzzing and most importantly in excess of £120,000 has been raised to date for vital research into MND.

Based on the success of the Amsterdam City Swim, the event has been brought to London by an inspiring group of friends.

Huibert, chair of London City Swim, said:

“The original idea came as an inspiration six years ago from a group of friends who swam in the Hellespont race in Turkey. They decided that on their return home to Amsterdam they would create an event to raise money and awareness for MND and support their friend Weert Jan Weerts, who had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

“Since then, it has grown from strength to strength – when my wife Annick and I moved back to London, we reconnected with our friends and we too wanted to create a City Swim here. Sadly Weert Jan Weerts is no longer with us – but we can remember him, and support the Motor Neurone Disease Association.”

All funds raised from the event will go to Project MinE, a genetic research project, and it was well attended by leading researchers from the Netherlands and the UK, including Bernard Muller, Leonard van den Berg and Professor Al-Chalabi.  There were also two people living with MND who took part, with the help of flotation devices and a support crew around them.

Events sponsors, Intertrust, have confirmed their continued involvement in the event next year, so work is already taking place to make next year’s swim bigger and better!  If you think you might be interested in taking part then please contact to be kept informed of developments.

The MND Association is so grateful to everyone involved in putting on the event – the London City Swim foundation have dedicated so much to help our vision of a world free from MND and their support can take us a step closer to achieving that.

Here’s a selection of tweets from the day…
