Research we fund

One of the missions of the MND Association is to fund and promote research to understand what causes MND, how to diagnose it and, most importantly, how to effectively treat it so that it no longer devastates lives.

All of the research we fund has undergone a rigorous application process, which complies with the Association of Medical Research Charities guidelines for best practice,  to ensure that we are funding the very best research to help us to unlock the secrets of the disease.

We currently fund approximately 40 research projects which have been split into four topics below:

Causes of MND

These projects aim to understand the causes and mechanisms of motor neurone degeneration

Marking disease progression

These projects aim to increase the speed of diagnosis by finding markers of disease progression (biomarkers)

Developing treatments

These projects aim to test the effectiveness of potential treatments from the laboratory to clinical trials

Healthcare

These projects aim to increase the quality of life of people living with MND
