How would you describe your role to someone you’ve just met?

I am a research nurse. I approach patients who have been diagnosed with MND and tell them about any research that is going on, or upcoming and ask if they are interested in taking part in research, if they are, I gain consent to send them information about studies relevant to them. I then deliver these studies, which involves completing study visits with the patients and being there to answer any questions they may have.

What made you want to become a nurse?

My mom has severer asthma when I was growing up and we spent a lot of time in hospital, I always looked up to the nurses and wanted to be that person that was there for people.

What attracted you to your current role?

I have been doing Neurology research for a while, but I liked the fact this role is just MND and being able to focus on one speciality.

Who has had the biggest impact on your career?

My previous manager, and the clinical R&D lead in my previous job. As soon as I started at the trust, they saw potential in me, and pushed me to promote, where I would have never had the confidence without them.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Being with the patients and hopefully making a small positive experience for them.

What’s been the stand-out moment in your career so far?

Professionally when I promoted to my management role but being able to support the patients and make even a small difference means more.

What are your ambitions for the future?

To work closer with people living with MND and support them as much as I can.

What advice would you give to someone who wanted a job like yours?

Keep applying, it is a rewarding job that gives people a sense of hope.
