MND Association Patron Kevin Sinfield CBE will be back on the road this December for his sixth 7 in 7 in 7 Challenge in support of MND charities.
Earlier today, Kevin appeared on BBC Breakfast to announce the exciting challenge which will see him attempt to complete seven marathons in seven regions of the UK and Ireland in just seven days.
This year’s challenge will start on 1 December in Bury St Edmunds and will see Kevin and his team visit Ipswich, Cork, Swansea, Sheffield, Workington, Whitehaven, Dundee and North Yorkshire before arriving in Leeds on 7 December. As in previous years, Kevin is aiming to raise £777,777 which will be split between the MND Association, the Leeds Hospital Charity, Irish MND Association, the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, MND Scotland and The Darby Rimmer Foundation.
People living with MND, their friends and families will also be invited to take part in the Extra Mile events during each of Kev’s ultra marathons, which have created some of the most memorable moments of the past five years. Kevin and his team will be running in memory of his former Leeds Rhino teammate Rob Burrow CBE who died from MND aged 41 in June last year.
Speaking on BBC Breakfast this morning, Kevin said the past five years had been ‘brilliant’.
He said: “To be honest it has become less about the running and more about the people we meet along the way. We pick up on their energy and use that as fuel to help us get round.
“It’s tough and it’s challenging but the people and families we have met are amazing.”
To date, Kevin’s challenges have raised more than £10 million for MND charities with the MND Association funding important translational research projects and establishing the Association’s ground-breaking Research Nurse Network. The pioneering network of specialist nurses will allow people living with MND to get access to clinical trials much more quickly, providing a springboard to greater progress in MND research
The MND Association’s Chief Executive Tanya Curry said: “To so many within our community and beyond Kevin is a hero, who pushes himself to the limits to raise funds and awareness of this devastating disease.
“We are thrilled to learn that Kevin and his extraordinary team will be taking part in this, their sixth challenge, which, once again, will see him travel the length and breadth of the UK and Ireland.
“As always, the MND community – and everyone at the MND Association – will be right behind Kev and the team, wishing them well and spurring them on every step of the way.
“We can’t wait to get started – the countdown to December is on!”
The announcement of this year’s challenge comes the day before the VIP premiere of a fly-on-the-wall documentary looking back over the 2024 challenge. Kevin Sinfield: Running for Rob, which has been produced by Ram Films, will be shown at Leeds Everyman Theatre on 29 May at 7pm, with proceeds going to Kevin’s chosen charities.
