Better Conversations with MND is a video-based resource that helps people understand communication change. It’s built on a simple idea: conversations always involve at least two people, and what they do together makes communication work.

Watching people communicate with speech change, and with no speech, can be upsetting, but these videos show how conversations can still be meaningful, warm and about everyday things. Some people with mild speech problems can find conversation very difficult, whilst others with more advanced MND may still enjoy rich and engaging conversation experiences. It’s important to note that everyone living with MND is unique and follows their own communication journey.

The videos feature seven couples living with MND. Four people are still using speech to communicate, and three are using different technologies to support communication. Some people may be easier to understand than others, and people’s physical abilities vary. This can affect how comfortable or practical different communication technologies are for them to use.

This resource is for people living with MND, their families and carers, and health and social care professionals. The first link includes a range of videos showing natural, everyday conversations. The second link shares what people have said about their own communication experiences, including practical ideas and helpful tips. You may find these videos useful for thinking about your own conversations and about what feels most helpful for you and the people around you.
