Our Research Nurses are helping more people living with MND take part in clinical trials and research studies that matter to them.
We launched this initiative around 18 months ago, and we’re delighted that Research Nurses are now in place across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with more still to come. While there’s still more work to do, these nurses are already proving absolutely pivotal.
Through our Research Nurse Network, we’re helping break down some of the barriers that can make taking part in research difficult, whether that’s where someone lives, the cost of travel, or limited access to specialist support nearby. Everyone should have the same opportunity to be involved in research, no matter their circumstances.
Our Research Nurses guide people through every step of the process. They provide clear, honest information, help identify which trials or studies someone may be eligible for, explain what participation involves, and offer ongoing support throughout.
Their work is making research feel more accessible, more understandable, and more achievable for people living with MND and for their families.
Lead Research Nurse - Kate Hartley
Our Lead Research Nurse Kate Hartley previously worked in neurology as a Multiple Sclerosis Specialist Nurse in Nottingham for 18 years. She then moved to the private healthcare sector as a nurse manager and latterly a project manager.
Her role sees her ensure all MND patients have access to trials through the Research Nurse Network alongside managing strategy, recruitment and training. She also promotes our work to patients, professionals and the public, providing expertise on care and research.
Kate said: "The programme is now progressing at pace. The research nurses play a vital role in advancing MND research and improving care. We look forward to building on this strong start in the months ahead.”
