Understanding more about the changes that MND can cause to partner/spouse relationships and what support is needed to help couples during the MND journey in the UK.

Previous research has shown that having an MND diagnosis and the subsequent progression of the disease has a profound impact on the relationships between partners/spouses. It has been suggested that MND can lead to changes in partner relationships through partners/spouses having to adjust to new roles, changes in communication, declines in caregivers’ health and wellbeing, changes in intimacy, and changes to other relationships outside of the person with MND/caregiver partnership. However, little research exists which specifically examines the changes that MND can cause to partner/spouse relationships and what support is needed to help couples during the MND journey.

The researchers want to design a study to look at what support is needed for couples as it is vital that there is recognition of the changes that occur in these relationships over time. It is hoped that the study will make a difference to the support that people receive and find potential solutions that may help people to better navigate this difficult journey.

Taking Part

What does taking part involve?

Taking part in the study will involve participants sharing their thoughts on the development of a research study that would be meaningful to people with MND and their partners/spouses. The researchers will discuss the participants experience through an interview (which can be online via video call or via telephone) to help build the study and ensure the research explores areas that will make a difference to people on this journey.

Who can take part?

• People with MND

Spouses or partners of people with MND

Aged 18+

Able to consent to taking part
