Gaining a better understanding of the therapeutic potentials of engagement with music and how music is used within the home of families where a parent is receiving palliative care.

Research has shown that music therapy can lead to positive outcomes for reduction of several symptoms associated with palliative illness, and music therapy has also been suggested to be therapeutically effective for bereaved children. However, how music is used within the 'everyday' family home when a parent is receiving palliative care is not well understood.

As MND progresses, relationships change, and means of expression and engagement change. This study could begin to build an evidence base of family-driven musical engagement (in the 'everyday' home environment) that people with MND may find helpful and positive in relation to parent-child connections, shared experiences, and dealing with difficult emotions.

Taking Part

What does taking part involve?

Taking part will involve a single interview, conducted over Zoom, that will last approximately 40-50 minutes.

If you would like to take part in this study and an adaptive or alternative interview method is required, please get in touch with the researcher. Alternative interview techniques will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

All interviews will include an introduction, and a debrief at the end.

Participants can request a break at any point during the interview, or several breaks as needed. Participants will have the right to refuse to answer a question, and no reason / explanation need be given and they can terminate the interview at any time.

After the interview, participants will have the option of reviewing the transcript of their interview with the lead researcher over Zoom.

Who can take part?

  • People with MND who have received palliative care and have a child under the age of 18
  • Aged 18+
  • Able to communicate fluently in English
