Causes of MND

The causes of MND are thought to be a combination of environmental, lifestyle and subtle genetic factors.

People living with and affected by MND tell us that progressing research and increasing our understanding of MND to find effective treatments and a cure is the key priority for them.

More information about the causes of MND is available below and in our Overview of MND research information sheet.

For an overview on ALS epidemiology, pathological mechanisms and therapeutics, read the recently published review by Professors Robert Brown and Ammar Al-Chalabi. Free access available thanks to The New England Journal of Medicine. Find the paper here.
