A Short History of Falling
In 2018, Joe Hammond hit the headlines when he told of how, following his motor neurone disease (MND) diagnosis, he had written 33 birthday cards for his two sons Tom and Jimmy to open.
Joe has now shared more of his story in a book A Short History of Falling, Everything I Observed About Love Whilst Dying, which describes his experience of living with the disease.
When the book was published in September Bookseller named it Book of the Month with reviewer Caroline Sanderson calling it a ‘beautiful, devastating and stunningly written memoir’.
Joe had always wanted to be a writer and had some professional success writing for theatre. But he admits he ‘lost confidence’ and instead focused on being a stay at home dad to his boys. They were the reason he wrote the book – Joe, now 50, wanted to give them chance to know him after his death.
The book is a frank and honest account of the effect MND has had on Joe’s body, mind and life.
It’s available as a hardback, ebook and audio book.
