Our research policies

We believe that the key to defeating MND lies in fostering strong collaboration between leading researchers around the world and sharing new understanding of the disease as rapidly as possible. The MND Association has a number of statements on research including research involving animals, stem cells, unproven treatments, and our research strategy.

Research involving animals

Approximately two thirds of the research projects we fund do not involve the use of animals. With those that do, we and the researchers we fund are committed to ensuring that the welfare of the animals is considered at all times.

The MND Association is a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC). All AMRC members support the AMRC position statement on the use of animals in research. We are also signatories to the Concordat on Openness on Animal research.

Stem cells and MND

In principle we will support stem cell research, as long as we are satisfied that it is legal, has a sound scientific rationale and has the potential to bring us closer to treatments and/or a cure for MND.

Unproven treatments

At the present time, the only drug that has been proven to slow the progression of MND is riluzole. Unproven treatments, may appear to offer some hope and an opportunity to take a proactive approach to tackling the disease. However, these remarkable claims are not supported by any reliable scientific evidence.
