Dr Nikhil (Nik) Sharma
Dr Nikhil Sharma is a Consultant Neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London, Senior Clinical Researcher at the MRC Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing at UCL (LHA) and Co-Director of the MND Care and Research Centre.
Dr Sharma qualified at the University of Liverpool and completed his general medical training at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London. He completed his training in Neurology at Kings College Hospital, Hurstwood Park Neuroscience centre and the National Hospital of Neurology.
Dr Sharma was awarded a PhD by the University of Cambridge in 2007. His thesis used motor imagery and functional magnetic imaging (fMRI) to explore neuroplasticity and neurodegeneration in large-scale motor networks (funded by Brain Entry Scholarship, UK Stroke Association & Raymond and Beverly Sackler fellowships).
During his clinical training in Neurology, he spent a number of years as a visiting fellow at the National Institute of Health (NIH), Bethesda, USA where he was awarded a prestigious NRSA fellowship. His work used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), functional (resting state fMRI) and structural imaging (diffusion tensor imaging) to better understand plasticity of the human motor system.
Dr Sharma’s research program brings together these skills to develop an innovative approach to better understand motor neurone disease.
